Sister Betty Muhammad, who held the post of Secretary to Messenger Elijah Muhammad in 1967 and 1968, and as she put it, "was priviledged to sit at the table with Him taking dictation as He answered the many letters..." published this letter, among others, in her book "Dear Holy Apostle".
"Dear Brother: Regarding your question on the prayer, being
upright is the original proper
wording
for the prayer. It was I who added, 'trying to upright,' because you are
not upright until you obey and carry into practice the Principles of the
teachings of the Religion of Islam.
This we are not doing in America. We are trying to be upright. Even where you are now (prison) you cannot practice the Principles of Islam, as they should be in prison. So this is why I added the word 'trying'."
