Hajj is the once-in-a-lifetime-obligatory pilgrimage of Muslims and is absolutely required on all capable Muslims. For followers of Messenger Elijah Muhammad's Teachings, the attending of SAVIOUR'S DAY (the annual convention held in acknowledgment of the birth day of Allah in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad) is considered the fulfillment of The Hajj.

Shahadah is a declaration of faith. A person must recite the shahadah to convert to Islam. The shahadah in the Nation of Islam is:: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, Who came in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad, and I bear witness that  The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad is the Last Messenger of Allah to the Black man and woman in America."

S.A.A.S. / S.A.W.S. These letters are abbreviations for the words "Salla Allahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam", which means : may the blessing and the peace of Allah be upon him. When the name of  Messenger Muhammad is mentioned, a Muslim is to respect him and invoke this statement of peace upon him.

Masjid  is a place of worship. It is called a 'mosque' in English.

Rasul is a messenger. Allah sent  or raised many prophets and messengers. Amongst them, the names of twenty-five are mentioned in the Qur'an. From within the list, the Qur'an states the names of five Rasul who are the Mighty ones. These are: Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus), and Muhammad (s.a.w.s.). Messenger Elijah Muhammad is the Last Messenger of Allah to the Black man and woman in America.

Nabi is a prophet. To be a prophet he should receive a revelation from Allah that does not necessarily mean a revealed book. When a prophet is instructed to deliver his message to a certain group of people, he is a messenger. Muhammad of 1400 years ago is the Last Prophet.

Wudu is ablution (a special procedure of washing the body) that must be performed before someone says prayer or reads the Quran.

Taqwa is the love and fear that a Muslim feels for Allah. A person with taqwa desires to be in the good pleasures of Allah and to stay away from those things that would displease Allah. He is careful not to go beyond the bouds and limits set by Allah.

Sunnah means habit, practice, customary procedure, or action, norm and usage sanctioned by tradition. Muslim Followers of  Messenger Elijah Muhammad's Teachings and Programs follow the sayings, practices,and  living habits of Messenger Elijah Muhammad (s.a.w.s.)

The legal sources of jurisprudence in the Nation of Islam are not limited to the Quran. In certain instances the teachings of the Quran is subject to the writings, and recordings of Messenger Elijah Muhammad (s.a.w.s.), which may confirm what is mentioned in Qur'an, interpret and explain it, specify what is meant by some general verses, limit and restrict the meaning of some verse in it, or may explain something that has been revealed in Qur'an. Allah in many places in the Qur'an orders the Muslims to follow the teachings of The Messenger.

Ramadan is the holy month of prescribed fasting for the Muslims. Muslim who follows the sunah of Messenger Elijah Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) observes Ramadan Every Year in the first 30 days of the Month of December. This month was precribed for by Messenger Elijah Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) for his followers, because we used to worship a false God in this month.

Qur'an is the holy book revealed unto Prophet Muhammad  of 1400 years ago, from Allah through angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years. Messenger Elijah Muhammad  (s.a.w.s.) taught His followers that only 2/3 of the Qur'an was for us (The Black man and woman in America) and the rest was for that other fellow.

Qiblah is the direction that Muslims face when they pray. For most Muslims it is in the direction of the Ka'bah in Mecca. But in the June 9, 1972 issue of Muhammad Speaks Newspaper, Messenger Elijah Muhammad said:  "We have to build a new world. As you noticed while the Minister was praying, I had not my face turned towards the East, for the sunlight of truth is not to come from the East, today! It is to come from the West! And since God, Almighty, In the Person of  Master Fard Muhammad, Has Made me the first to rise from you, I must turn you on a light coming from here--from the West. No more shall we turn our face to the East, looking for light from the East, for the Sun of Light has risen in the West!!!......"

Ka'bah is the first house of worship originally built by Adam and later on reconstructed by Abraham and Isma'il. It is a cubed shaped structure based in the city of Mecca to which all Muslims turn to in their five daily paryers.

Kafir is a person who refuses to submit himself to Allah (God), a disbeliever in God.

La ilaha illallah is part of the first pillar of Islam. The meaning of which is: " There is no God worthy of worship except Allah."

"Muhammadun Rasul Allah," is the second part of this first pillar, which means: "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

Da'wah is inviting others to Islam. Missionary work.

Bismillahir rahmanir rahim is a phrase from the Qur'an that is recited before reading the Qur'an. It is also recited before doing any daily activity. The meaning of it is: "In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful."

Allah is the name for the creator of the Universe . He is the Merciful, the Beneficent, the Knowledgeable, the Protector, the Mighty, the God, the Provider, the Exalted, the Lord, the All-Knowing, the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, the Magnificent, the Wise, the Loving, the First, the Last, and the Eternal. The Qur'an mentions around 100 beautiful names for Allah through which Muslims may understand and recognize Him. He came in the Person of  Master W.D. Fard Muhammad July 4, 1930 to North America and raised up a Messenger (The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) from among the Black man and  woman in America.

Adhan is the call for the daily prayers. The person who calls the Adhan is called a Mu'adhin. A Mu'adhin calls the Adhan five times a day before Muslims are to perform their daily Prayer. The Adhan is composed of specific words and phrases to be recited loudly in the Arabic language so that the neighbors can recognize the time schedule for the prayers. There are many beautiful clocks available now that call the Adhan. There is even a program available for your computer desktop that calls the Adhan.

Allahu akbar is a statement is said by Muslims numerous times. During the call for prayer, during prayer, when they are happy, and wish to express their approval of what they hear. Its meaning: "Allah is the Greatest."

Al-hamdu lillahi rabbil 'alamin is a verse from the Qur'an that Muslims recite and say many times per day. A Muslim uses this expression in every activity of his daily life. It is a statement of thanks, appreciation, and gratitude from the creature to his Creator. The meaning of it is: "Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds."

Eid is an Arabic name to mean a festivity, a celebration, a recurring happiness, and a feast. Muslims who follow the Sunnah of Messenger Elijah Muhammad (s.a.w.s) celebrates two major 'Eids. One, A celebration of the Coming of Allah, in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad on July 4th. and second The Ramadan feast, celebrated by Muslims after fasting the month of Ramadhan as a matter of thanks and gratitude to Almighty Allah.

Islam is an Arabic word the root of which is peace It means among other things submission to the will of the Creator of the Universe.

Jinn is another word for devil. The word Jinn in Arabic means hidden.  According to the Qur'an the Jinn were like men and were made by Allah from fire. Messenger Elijah Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) taught that the fire is symbolic of the way Yacub (the Blackman who made of the devil-whiteman) got his idea by playing with two pieces of steel, one that had magnetic in it and one that did not. Banging these two peices of steel together, while he was a child, age 6, he saw fire.  The whiteman is so deceitful in his actions that the knowledge of him being the real devil is hidden to the average person.

Madinah the first city-state that came under the banner of Islam. It is where the Prophet Muhammad of 1400  years ago, masjid and grave are situated. For those who follow the sunnah of Messenger Elijah Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) Chicago, Illinois is considered our Madinah. It is where Messenger Elijah Muhammad established his largest Temple and where his grave is situated. Detroit, Michigan is considered our Mecca.

Du'a is a prayer.

Zakah or Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam which means charity or more specifically purification and increment of one's wealth.

Zuhr is the obligatory prayer, that is performed  at noon.

Asr is the late afternoon obligatory prayer.

Fajr is the obligatory prayer, that is performed  at dawn

Ishha is the obligatory prayer, that is performed at night before bedtime

Magrib is the obligatory prayer, that is performed at sunset

Imam is a religious leader

Jumu'ah is a congregational prayer on Friday at noon

Hijrah means migration. Fourteen hundred (1400) years ago, the Hijrah referred to the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Madinah. The word hijrah means to leave a place to seek sancturary or freedom from persecution or freedom of religion or any other purpose. It is interesting to note that Messenger Elijah Muhamnad (s.a.w.s.) left Detroit (Mecca) to go to Chicago (Medinah) after being persecuted in Detroit (Mecca).

Ayat-ul-kursi  is Chapter 2, Verse 255 of the Qur'an.  "The Verse of Knowledge".

The following is one translations of this verse

"Allah! There is no god but He, - the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permits? He knows what (appears to His creatures as) Before or After or Behind them. Nor shall they compass anything of His knowledge except as He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens ad the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory)."

Shaitan or satan is another name for devil or the source of evil in the world. He (shaitan) always tries to misguide and mislead people. The Qur'an states that Satan is not an angel but a member of the Jinn. His other name is Iblis.According to the Qur'an, when Allah created Adam, He ordered the angels as well as Iblis to prostrate for Adam. They all obeyed the order of Allah except Iblis. His argument was that Allah created Adam from clay and Iblis from the flame of fire. Accordingly, Iblis thought that he was better than Adam. Hence, Allah told him that he will dwell in Hell. Iblis asked Allah for a postponement until the hereafter. Allah granted his request. Iblis swore that he would mislead and misguide all the people except those sincere and devoted worshipers of Allah. Allah told him that only the misguided ones would follow him and that He would fill Hell with him and his followers. According to the Teachings of Messenger Elijah Muhammad (s.a.w.s) The white man is the devil and well fits the description given of him in the Qur'an.

Surah means chapter.

Ayah means a miracle and a sign. The Qur'an is considered to be a miracle itself. Each verse or sentence is called an Ayah or a miracle. The plural of Ayah is called Ayat, which means miracles.

Shahadah means bearing witness that Allah is God and Muhammad is his Messenger.
