First Printing of Holy Qur'an in U.S.

By Dr. Min. Abdul Salaam

(Special to Muhammad Speaks)

 Part II

It is not without considerable thought on the part of the Eastern Muslim, that the historic printing of the Holy Qur'an was allowed in a fully Christian country. Since the Holy Qur'an has always been protected from corruption at the hands of any people every since its revelations almost 1400 years ago, it is significant that it was felt that the followers of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad most certainly would continue that tradition.

Since we know that the real truth of the matter is that the  Holy Qur'an is really instructions, warnings and pertinent teachings to God's last Messenger - and that Messenger is here today in the person of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad - we are not surprised that the Will of Allah has manifested itself as it has.

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, himself, is most certainly directly responsible for the current popularity of the Holy Qur'an here and it is indeed through his direction that cost levels have been lowered.

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, being the Messenger of Allah, has given through the years, the correct up-to-date understanding of the Holy Qur'an, a book that has formerly been a complete mystery to the people of America.

Now that the Holy Qur'an has become available right here in America - through special arrangement and the cooperation of Darul Kutub Islamia, the Pakistan-based holders of the copyright of the Muhammad Ali Translation, and the Specialty Promotions Co., Inc. and Books and Things Inc., at 106 Lenox Ave. in New York City, both Muslim owned and operated corporations - it is necessary to understand something about caring for this Book.

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad has specifically stated for example, that at this time he does not desire that the Holy Qur'an any longer be sent to prisons. He has of course, as always, good reason for his decisions which he has conveyed to us.

He declares that since the Holy Qur'an is a book that contains the word of God, it should be treated with great respect. We are listing below some of his specific instructions and you will agree that these requirements cannot be easily adhered to in prison surroundings:

1. The Holy Qur'an should be kept on the top of the highest shelf or in a place where one must look up to it.

2. Keep it clean.

3. The Book should not be placed on your lap or held below the waist for reading. Do not carry it into any unclean place for reading.

4. Don't read in a loud tone or in a whisper but in a voice between the two - a moderate tone.

5. Always wash your hands before picking up and reading the Holy Qur'an.

6. Start reading the Qur'an first reading and studying the introduction. Then begin by studying and thoroughly familiarizing yourself with the very first chapter which is actually a prayer.

7. Next, read and study the Second Surah which is one's first introduction to God, whose proper name is Allah.

A final word of instruction. The Holy Qur'an that we have today is an instruction to a Messenger. That Messenger is amongst us today in the person of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. It is he whom is best qualified to give us the true meaning of that which we will find in the Holy Qur'an.

We should therefore, read the Qur'an for ourselves and never attempt to teach its meaning unless we have been taught that meaning and its clear understanding by Allah's Messenger.

"O followers of the Book!

"O followers of the Book! Our Messenger has come to you making clear to you much of what you concealed of the Book and passing over much; indeed there come to you light and a clear book from Allah" (5:14-19).
