CHICAGO,
Illinois--Before Direct Deposit for social security checks became available
to senior citizens, they ran the risk of getting mugged after cashing their
checks. Shopping for groceries presented another problem. Most couldn't carry
many bags. Additional trips to the store meant more chances of being robbed.
Some suffered severe beatings, some death. All this while being charged large
amounts to cash their checks at local currency exchanges. Meanwhile, the
service and quality of food they received left much to be desired. Add to
this, the seniors who were shut-ins. They were left to beg non-caring relatives
and friends to do their shopping for them. If you have not experienced this
terrible problem, it is difficult to imagine how horrible and frustrating
it can be. The seniors complained, but the problems went unsolved.
Under the leadership of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, the Nation of Islam in Chicago, Illinois opened two grocery stores. The Shabazz Grocery Store and Your Super Market. Mr. Muhammad insisted on the highest quality of food and service, while charging low prices. Both stores were extra clean. Very few non-Muslims patronized the Nation's stores.
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad decided to cure the problems of the senior citizens and the lack of non-Muslims buying from the two Muslim stores.
Mr. Muhammad formed a team and developed and plan called, "Smart Shopper." The team would solicit senior citizens to be picked up and brought to the Nation of Islam's clean, well lighted, well stocked stores. Security and help for those long tired arms to from the stores, cashing of checks were provided at no cost to the seniors.
With all of the services, free of any charges, one would thing that there was a fush to sign up after the information was made public. There were no takers.
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad called another meeting of his team and gave the solution. A film would be made. The film was titled, "Why We Lose." The team would show the film and the solicit participation. What a success. The accompaning information and pictures will attest to the foresight and committment to this wonderful program. This was just one small contribution by The Honorable Elijah Muhammad. This and other contributions were and are ignored by most media.
The seniors loved it and the stores became profitable. For information concerning the Smart Shopper Program, contact Brother Ahmad at
