Roscoe Mapps Muhammad Sr. was born on November 16, 1921, to the late Robert and Emma Mapps in Cordel County, Georgia. While still a child, the family relocated to Detroit, MI.
Roscoe went to work for the Chrysler Corporation at an early age. After giving more than twenty-five years of loyal service to the Chrysler Corporation, he retired in 1971.
Roscoe was educated in the Detroit Public School System. While living in Detroit, Roscoe met the love of his life, Juanita Owens. They were joined in holy matrimony of April 18, 1964. Together they raised six children: Roscoe Jr., Robert, Vera, Felton, Elaine and Rasema. Roscoe and Juanita celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary this year.
Roscoe enjoyed traveling, baseball, and had a love for ice cream and cookies, but most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and family.
Captain Roscoe became a member of the Nation of Islam at an early age under the leadership of his uncle, The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad (peace be upon him). He was appointed Captain of Muhammad Mosque No. 1 and then became the regional Captain of the East Coast division for over fifteen years.
Captain Muhammad had four children that preceded him in death: Roscoe Jr., Felton, Vera, and Elaine. His brother Jamil and sister Adell also preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and dedicated wife of 43 years, Juanita. His children were very devoted to him. Robert Mapps, Detroit, MI; Rasema Montgomery (Sekou) of W. Bloomfield, MI; a daughter-in-law, Edythe Mapps of Inkster, MI; sister-in-law, Jacqueline Powell (Harold) of Detroit, MI; a brother-in-law, William Garrett of Pasco, WA; twenty-six (26) grand children, fifty-two (52) great grand children and twenty-six (26) great great grandchildren, adopted sons, Roland and Cordell Muhammad, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and a supportive friend, Bernice Winn.
